Summer Optimum

Cue: Here comes the sun! The world (or summer, at least) is a high schooler’s oyster! Without the pressure of class assignments or studying for tests, and possibly a shiny new driver’s permit in hand, you have the downtime to explore interests, academic or otherwise. Internships, volunteering, counselor jobs, academic camps, building on your talent and interests - the possibilities are endless!

Summer is a great opportunity to learn how to balance hard work with summer fun! Is there a beach close to that particular college you are interested in? Take a trip so you can attend a college tour and also find time to relax by the beach. Working a part-time job? Squeeze in some time for your personal narrative lounging by the pool on your days off or research universities you are interested in for summer programs they offer high schoolers. Discuss your interests with friends and family, teachers, and counselors, they could guide you to paths you may be unaware of! Be sure to check program application details for requirements like counselor nominations or recommendations.

Being organized is key to success and balancing your time. In college, there will be many demands on your time with course loads, friends, internships, jobs and so on. Your experiences now will build a great foundation in preparation for college in your near future. So, this summer, go ahead and lay those stepping stones to college but don’t forget to enjoy those iced lemonades on the way!
